Standing Strong: How to Build Resilience Through Life’s Challenges

I’m pleased to share my thoughts on this week’s ’Coffee with Toks’ where I share thoughts and inspiration drawn from my journey as a businesswoman, designer, and mum.

Each piece touches on topics that speak to life’s ups and downs—overcoming challenges, finding joy in the little moments, or embracing resilience.

In today’s instalment, we’re focussing on resilience—the ability to stand strong when life’s storms come our way. I hope this message encourages you to prepare for life’s challenges and stay grounded in what truly matters.

Grab a cup of coffee, and let’s dive into this message on resilience.

In hurricane-prone areas, people are rarely caught off guard when the storms arrive. Hurricanes follow a season, and those living in these regions know what to expect. As a result, they prepare well in advance. They hurricane-proof their homes with fortified windows, stock up on food and water, and ensure they have sandbags ready to combat flooding. Valuables are moved to higher ground, and when the evacuation warnings are issued, they don’t waste time; they act swiftly.

There’s no panic—only preparation.

Similarly, life and business have their own ‘hurricane seasons.’ We all experience periods when it feels as though everything is falling apart. Unexpected setbacks, emotional storms, or unforeseen crises can knock us off balance, leaving us feeling lost. But just like those living in hurricane zones, we can prepare beforehand.

Resilience is not something you are; it’s a choice you make before the storm arrives.

When a hurricane warning is issued, people don’t sit and wait—they act. They put up sandbags, move valuables, stock up on supplies, or decide to leave. In life, we must do the same. You can’t avoid every storm but can prepare and decide how to face it.

Resilience is about standing firm, knowing you might lose some things, but holding on to what truly matters. Decide now that, no matter what comes, you will survive and thrive. That’s true resilience.

On the subject of standing strong, why don’t you join us for our next Mama Tribe in-store event? The lovely Sabina Borton will be speaking to us about pregnancy and toddlerhood, and how to navigate the surprises that show up. As usual, it is free to attend but you have to register:
