Don't Settle for Less- A Lesson From Our Barber

My husband and sons are very particular about their hair. For seven years, they stayed loyal to the same barber. His work was flawless, but his timekeeping was non-existent, and his character, questionable.

Week after week, they wasted time rescheduling, waiting around, and justifying it because “at least the haircut was good.”

Last month, they’d had enough. They switched to a new mobile barber, and the difference is unreal. He’s punctual, inspiring, and courteous. The boys actually look forward to their haircuts now.

Stay with me, I'm going somewhere 😊

Recently, I reached out to a contractor I worked with previously. His craftsmanship is incredible. But he has an outstanding commitment to me- which he keeps promising to fulfil.

So when the Harrods opportunity came up, I saw it as a chance for him to redeem the past and invited him to work on our concession space. He was enthusiastic, came out to assess the work, and even agreed on a start date and then disappeared.

No explanation. No returned calls. Just silence.

I’ve moved on, with no bitterness. Just clarity.

Because I recognise the season I’m in—one of elevation. And elevation requires pruning.

At The Baby Cot Shop, we’ve always held ourselves to a high standard. But as we step into a new space—physically and symbolically- our new partnership with Lux Afrique Boutique and the upcoming Harrods concession, we’re even more intentional about who we partner with. The people behind the scenes matter just as much as the pieces we create.

I’m far from perfect, but I’ve learnt that surrounding myself with excellence fills in the gaps. There'll always be the temptation to settle; sometimes, the wrong people are readily available, and other times, they'll do it quicker. But don't do it- I have, and paid the price.

Fear will make you settle, especially when someone’s almost right.

Don’t be afraid to wait for better.
