Here’s the One Thing These Mumfluencers Would Advise When Designing a Nursery

Designing a nursery may just be your biggest mum project yet. So it’s recommended to research, get advice and plan to ensure your baby’s room is a safe, snuggly and standout space. Need some inspiration? These mumfluencers reveal all…

“We chose a luxe white theme for our baby’s nursery. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t too colourful as black and white colours have been shown to be beneficial to baby development.
As we opted for a simple design, I didn’t use an interior designer. However, should I have wanted a themed nursery, I would definitely advise using a service like The Baby Cot Shop’s Interior Design Service for an extra special room. If you’re designing the nursery yourself, start during the early stages of pregnancy. We waited until I was 8 months pregnant (because I was so indecisive about what I wanted), but I couldn’t be much help to my partner as I was so tired and very round!”

“I opted for a nostalgic nursery theme that evokes a magical vibe. It has such a sweet feel to it and my kids love spending time with the little one there.
When creating a baby nursery, think how you want the space to be used. As we have three children, we’ve had to rethink their bedrooms many times and I always start with what I want my child to be able to do in their room. For example, how many children will use the space? Will you benefit from a nappy changing area? Where will you read them a story? And if your little one is sharing a room with a sibling, you can still create their own corner in the space, with charming toys, a wardrobe and changing unit.”

“Even though I knew I was having a girl, I kept my nursery gender-neutral. I opted for a warm, light yellow complete with white baby furniture, which was lovely and cheery. I wanted a nursery that was fuss-free, not too highly stylised and one that could grow with my baby, so I chose decorative light switches, light fittings and beautiful wall décor that could be removed once my little one outgrew them.
My top tip when designing a nursery would be to have a ‘working triangle’ space. This technique is used to maximise efficiency in kitchens whereby the three main work areas (sink, fridge and cooker) are in a triangle. This translates brilliantly for a nursery, but instead, the main triangle work areas are a cot, changing table and wardrobe. You’ll soon realise that you need everything very close by, especially if there’s a particularly bad nappy situation!”

Ting, My Travel Monkey?
When I was a mum-to-be, my nursery vision was to create a calm and restful space. I wanted to make sure I had a comfortable armchair for feeding, good lighting and neutral, muted colours (even though I knew I was having a boy). While the walls were plain, I injected pockets of colour via the pictures, toy baskets, bunting and a vibrant rug
My one top tip would be to try and imagine your baby’s room in 10 years’ time. While it may be tempting to make it cute and baby-like, I would recommend going for more of a timeless, stylish and elegant look – that way it can be easily changed in the future. My youngest will soon be moving into his older brother's room as they want to share a bunk bed together, so now is my chance to create an office space in his old nursery. And because I've chosen neutral colours which I still like, I don't have to repaint the walls – yay!”
